“The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” Mark 1:3
Is there anyone who is not convinced that the great nation of America has become a vast land of spiritual wilderness? A brief consideration of the candidates seeking the highest office in the land is further proof that we have strayed so far away from God and His principles. Truly, the very people whom God has blessed so greatly now occupy what can only be described as a wasteland, a desert place when it comes to the things of our Lord! And this is what a wilderness is, simply a desolate place where life has been so devalued and diminished. This is the state of the United States of America!
When John the Baptist radically appeared on the scene in the scriptures, he was not a very popular figure. In fact, he was a social outcast or misfit as is evident in Mark 1:4, “And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;” I doubt he was invited to have lunch with the city leaders or was ever featured on the radio or television. But he was on a mission as the “voice of one crying in the wilderness.” Who is that one today? Is there even one today? I am concerned that even the church has become dormant with the message of the Gospel. It is not at all making a difference in the world we live in! What a piercing indictment of the most powerful entity that exists today!
What our world needs now; what our state and city need is a modern day “John the Baptist”, a radical voice of one crying in the wilderness of America. And the message of the original biblical patriarch must be the same message preached today. “Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” Who will stand and be that voice? Who is God calling in this hour to stand and deliver?
