Real Peace on Earth and Goodwill Toward All Men

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Luke 2:13-14 KJV

One of the most exciting stories surrounding the birth of Jesus was the visitation of the angels to the shepherds, who were keeping watch over their sheep.  To the average person, this probably is not a big deal when we consider all that was happening that phenomenal night when our Savior was born.  But, I believe God was sending a powerful message to all mankind as to His purpose for the miraculous virgin birth.  Truly the world would no longer be the same as He ushered in His plan for reconciliation with sinful man.

The Contemporary English Version ‘s (CEV) translation of Luke 2:14 really speaks volume as it proclaims, “Praise God in heaven! Peace on earth to everyone who pleases God.”  In fact, these words help us understand why we still are not seeing God’s purpose being fulfilled in the earth, even after the birth, life, death and resurrection of Christ.  It is obvious that our Father in heaven desires for us to live in peace; peace with Him and peace with one another.  However, we live in a world that is void of this.  What we see all around us is chaos and unrest in every corner of our society.  So, what is the reason for this lack of peace?

Could it be the latter part of Luke 2:14, “to everyone who pleases God” that contains the clue to our dilemma today?  Is pleasing God the key to peace on earth?  I would say so.  The state of our modern world is definitely out of sync with God and His will.  And note I said, our world, meaning this is a global issue and not just an American thing.  THE WHOLE WORLD IS IN A STATE OF PEACELESSNESS!  Just consider the nations all over the planet that are at war or some kind of conflict.  Think about the numbers of people who lose their lives daily in war torn segments of the world.

So, what is the answer or “who” is the answer?  It is remarkable that the words of those angels to the shepherds out in the fields of the Gospel of Luke, are still so relevant today.  God has provided us with an unshakeable source of peace; a peace that has not changed in thousands of years.  His name is Jesus Christ and I say emphatically that if you do not have Him in your life, you don’t know real peace.  Even if you are laden with worldly possessions, but you don’t have Christ your sense of peace is fake.  For only our Lord and Savior is the peace of God that brings us God’s good will.

Do you have Him in your life?  Do you live in His peace?
